January 5th, 2009 How do I start communicating with my host family?
Your host family will already have information about you that accompanies all the application materials, but share some of the things that best describe your personality--are you outgoing or a little bit shy; are you chatty or more a thinker; what is your neighborhood community like? Favorite movies? Favorite books?
Ask questions about your host family--what is their daily schedule like, find out a little more about your host siblings. Is school in session? What are their favorite subjects?
Ask for specific advice about clothes to bring--more details about the climate.
Find out if there are any small remembrances from America the children would be interested in your bringing...comic books? stickers?
t-shirts...
Find out if your mom would like you to bring something reflecting American cuisine...I'm thinking along the lines of a jar of Knotts preserves, or anything small, non-perishable, and not heavy. An interesting kitchen gadget that might not be available in New Zealand would be cool. Find out the interests of your host father--does he like gardening, computer stuff, sports? Would he like a subscription to an American magazine?
I was an AFS student to Brazil in 1965. T-shirts with something-American logos were popular, but now...I'm not sure what would be desireable now!
Go planning to immerse yourself as completely as possible in New Zealand's culture and traditions. Learn, if you can, about the Maoris. Steer clear of other foreign exchange students from your homeland--use every minute to absorb, learn, become where you are going. It will stay with you for a lifetime!
