January 5th, 2009 Allow DNS Resolving ?

  • I've read that allowing DNS Resolving can slow your browsing speed.Outpost Firewall check this option by default.I uncheck it by choice just in case;i use dial-up connection.Any thoughts or input?
As well, when i choose Help>Outpost Firewall on the Web> Outpost Homepage , i receive "the system cannot find the file specified" message. This is my 2nd clean install of OPFW ,the same problem occurred with my previous installation. No big deal, but is this common? Anybody know?

  • AAronn..I just edited the site address...make sure you go the edited one.

  • DNS resolving can be quick. You can just put your servers Ip address in ther. For example MY isp IS FREESERVE so I just have this rule

where the specified protocol is ....UDP
where the specified remote host is......195.92.195.95,195.92.195.94
    Where the remote port is.....DNS
    Allow it

The "remote hosts" are freeserves (yours will be different if you dont use freeserve) IP numbers .To find out your ISP NUMBER/S .Type in winipcfg.exe in start >run...then click "more info" and you will see DNS Servers.Click the little dotted square box next to it and in case you have more than one number. Then you can put your numbers in the rule.If there are more than one Ip address ..seperate them with a comma as above.
To get the help to work ...navigate to your start menu agnitum>outpost>help and click it there. If that doesnt work...navigate to your C:programes>agnitum>outpost>help>and click outpost.chm
Now hwn you click it in the main outpost program it should work.

  • yep, that's ok because they mentioned to type ipconfig/all into Command Prompt and that triggered my memory cos that's how i've done it before, but it was months ago and i couldn't recall the exact method.

  • winipcfg.exe just gives me "Windows cannot find..." etc. There's a way to find out the servers address in XP Home [my OS] but i forget...i'm not at all PC literate! At the moment when i select 'Details' my ISP Status window the sever's address says 0.0.0.0 !

  • You may like to check out this excellent guide here, that explains a bit about dns resolving as well as all other aspects of outpost.
