January 8th, 2009 [Modify Listing] Mod

  • I'm working on a new mod : Modify Listing. This mod will allow link owners to modify their existing listings. How it works is that when called, all fields are populated except [Email Address]. In order for the submission to be accepted, the supplied email address must match the email address in the database for the listing. If a linkback is required, then reciprocal link section appears - otherwise, not. Currently, you cannot change the link status - for example, from free to paid. Later, I will include this feature. Modified links are disabled (and absent from listings) until approved by admin - who receives email that a modified listing was submitted. So, one problem is that until approved, their listing does not display (as it did before it was modified). One solution could be to create another database field to store modifications, but then admin would have to be edited (Approve Modifications) - which I do not feel like doing.

Another problem is that you cannot test for uniqueness of Title and URL (as is done when you submit initially) as they already exist in the database - you would have to have listing author change them whether he wanted to or not, which is not good. So, creates issue that he could create duplicate entry (Title and/or URL).

    Thoughts.

  • I have decided to have delay the completion and release of the mod until phpLD v3.0 is released, and I have had to chance to look it over.

Perhaps do this in future? I could see paid submitees getting annoyed that their link has disappeard for perhaps 24hours. Worse if something happens and you don't visit your site for 2 to 3 days. It may seem unproffessional. Then again it will stop them tampering with it every 10 seconds :)

    Just two little thoughts...

Im not quite sure how it works but I am guessing that there will be a 'Modify listing' link next to each listing. As a user friendly for non-client users perhaps when clicked a message box appears to warn normal user that 'this section is for Administration do you still wish to proceed? enter / cancel'

Also perhaps for future the possibilty of a field that allows user to change listing email also. Of course like FB said a confirm modifications link will have to be sent to users current email before modifications request is sent to admin.

    Thoughts over. :)

  • 1. Mod will email submitter for verification - will be link in email for submitter to follow in order to complete the process.

    2. Here's what I may do. I like to keep my mods self-contained, without modifying existing phpLD files - the changes can be lost in upgrades. Otherwise, it would simple to construct by adding code to admin to manage modified listings. You will need to create new database table, PLD_LINK_MODIFIED.

    (a) Modified listing submitted.
    (b) Modified listing written to PLD_LINK_MODIFIED table
    (c) Submitter emailed to verify.
    (d) Submitter verifies.
    (e) Admin emailed with link to accept or decline modified listing. If modified, existing listing replaced with modified listing. Either way, entry in PLD_LINK_MODIFIED table deleted.
    (f) Submitter emailed as confirmation if modification accepted or declined.

That way, listing remains active. And, measures included to prevent abuse by other people trying to modify other people's listings.

  • any update on when you might release this mod?

  • I'll release [Modify Listing] Mod v1.00 BETA over the weekend. Not sure if this is already in the works for phpLD version 3, but in any event, it is almost done written.

  • any update on this mod as I just purchased version 3.0.2 today. This will be much appreciated.

  • What happened to this mod, VSDan? Are you still working on this?

  • is this mod ready for action? :D

Well you're heading in the right direction, this is apparently being worked on for the next imminent upgrade - 3.0.3

  • One thought....the mod should also email the site owner to let them know that modifications have been made to their liste, and that if they were not the ones that modified their listing to reply to the email.

It's just a good checks and balances to ensure that tampering didn't happen by anyone else.

  • Hi I like your idea yet User/modify listing account, is this not to already be part of 3.0 or is this something else?

    Thanks

  • Excellent...can't wait to take it out for a spin.

I wouldn't worry about this as it will no doubt be on David's list of 'to do's' thats if it isn't already in the pipeline. Just keep checkin!

    Kev

  • like the idea too.

  • I like it....many times I create the site description for clients and they want it changed, so it becomes a pain, and would be easier for them to change it themselves. They feel better knowing they created their own listing.
