January 8th, 2009 Budget USA 1U server colocation

  • Hi Experts! I'm looking for a very budget colocation provider within the US. My server is a standard 1U box, I only need 1 IP address, and the system is doing roughly 20 gigabytes of data per month. I am unsure what that would work out to be in terms of bandwidth (like 128k, etc) as I've always done metered unlimited bandwidth. Bottom line, though, is price. It MUST be below $80/month, preferrably more around the $40-$60 range. I already know about wholesalecolo.com, but the majority of their bandwidth is through Cogent. And Cogent's routers have some nasty ping times from where I'm sitting. Thanks!

  • Hi sbalmos-ga! I've been recently looking for a colocation provider myself and still had a few links bookmarked. I’ve also noticed the large amount of providers who are with Cogent as you mentioned and since you don’t ping great to Cogent, I’ve focused my research more on multi-backboned colocation providers. The best deal for a 1U that I’ve come across is probably at The Planet. They have a $50 monthly fee and a $50 one-time setup. You get 2 IPs, 50GB transfer (should be enough even if you actually use more than 20GB/month) with backbone connections to AT&T, UUNet, Qwest, Internap and Cogent. They also boast a 100% uptime guarantee (sounds fishy to me though). Their facilities seem about par with most providers. I won’t bore you with the rest of the details which all seem fairly standard, available at ( http://www.theplanet.com/solutions/colocation.php ). Cyber World also has a 1U plan with $50 monthly fee, no setup fee, that gives you 50GB transfer, 10 IPs with backbones to Time Warner Telecom, Touch America and Qwest (I emailed them and asked about the backbone details since they only list “multi-homed DS3 connections” on their website). For their sparingly thin details, see ( https://www.cyberworldhost.com/colocation.asp ). Multiple Image seems to have a special on colocation which is not advertised on their website. The deal expires on Oct 31, 2002. It gives you a 2U rack space, 50GB transfer and 8 IPs for $50/month. They didn’t mention who they connect to for bandwidth other than “Connection with three diverse top-tier Internet backbones to OC-3 or OC-12 levels” and a mention of “Direct OnNet(OC3) Connection” on their shared hosting page. For more information, see ( http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=2f5f0d59d077d57df691f15b88775ae2&threadid=79886 ) and Multiple Image’s website at ( http://www.multipleimage.com/ ). I hope this helps you in finding a cheap 1U colocation provider. Good luck, mrbuzz-ga Additional information: WebHostingTalk – Lots of good deals and discussions http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ Search strategy: colocation “dedicated server” forums 1U rack colocation colocation deals
